Virtual Weddings is an online platform that combines live streaming with Zoom integration, enabling wedding guests to participate in ceremonies remotely and engage in real-time from any location.
January 2020 - June 2020
Introduction
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in India, wedding guest limits had been reduced to a maximum of 50 attendees. I reckoned that our company, being a tech company that's all about Weddings, we were placed at the perfect intersection between millennialism and tradition that made me want to figure out how to solve for this problem.
Wedding guests could already live-stream their weddings for free on platforms like Youtube but the downside to this was that guests could only "watch" but not participate in the wedding. The bride and groom wouldn't be able to see the faces of their well-wishers and loved ones.
This led me to ask the question:
How might one design a tool to help wedding guests 'attend' a wedding virtually?
Research & Initial Assumptions
I started by doing a bit of work to contextualize the problem. I needed to identify some key considerations:
What is the value of the tool?
Who is this tool for?
Where and when would this tool be used?
Initial Research insights
During our initial research, we explored the idea of developing our own platform for live-streaming weddings, aiming to allow remote guests to participate fully in the ceremonies. However, we determined that we lacked the necessary infrastructure to support such a complex tool. Additionally, with established platforms like YouTube and Zoom already offering reliable streaming options, it became evident that creating a new tool would be redundant. This realization guided our focus toward enhancing the user experience by integrating existing technologies and features, ensuring a seamless and accessible virtual wedding experience for all participants.
Value proposition – why should it be made?

Solution
The silk fabric in the image closely resembles traditional Tamil silk sarees, known for their intricate patterns, luxurious texture, and cultural significance. These sarees are often worn during significant ceremonies, symbolizing elegance and heritage in Tamil Nadu. Draped alongside this fabric is a gold chain, which brings to mind the thali or mangal sutra—a sacred necklace worn by married women in South India as a symbol of their marital bond and the protection of their husband. However, in this image, the chain appears to be casually tossed across the photo, which introduces an element of disarray, perhaps hinting at a story of disruption or departure from tradition. Additionally, the model's bare back, absent of a blouse, further enhances this narrative of defiance or vulnerability, contrasting sharply with the typically conservative and structured way Tamil silk sarees and thalis are worn. This juxtaposition of cultural symbols with an unconventional presentation invites deeper reflection on the themes of tradition, identity, and personal freedom.
