Logo Design & Branding

Fall City Scoop - Ice cream shop
Overview

In this logo design project for Fall City Scoop, my primary objective was to create a visual identity that both celebrates the artisanal quality of homemade ice cream and anchors the brand in its local roots. The logo options features a textured, stencil-style typography, mirroring the organic and handcrafted essence of ice cream scooping. By minimizing the 'Fall City' text, the design draws more attention to 'Scoop', emphasizing the core of the business. The font, inspired by the idea of ice cream being scooped out, complements the playful yet rustic aesthetic, making it versatile for various applications—from signage to product packaging. This stencil approach ensures adaptability across different media, maintaining legibility and impact whether stamped, printed, or embossed. The overall design encapsulates a modern twist on a classic treat, aiming to attract a diverse audience while remaining memorable and distinctive.

Inspiration

My inspiration stemmed from the whimsical nature of ice cream and the nostalgic charm of small-town parlors. I focused on soft pastel tones and playful typography to evoke a sense of lightheartedness and community warmth. The use of hand-drawn textures and icons, such as scoops and cones, reflects the tactile and organic qualities of the product. Each variation embodies a different aspect of the brand identity, ranging from minimalist elegance to a more playful, illustrative approach, ensuring versatility for both signage and packaging.

Sketches

The sketching process for the Fall City Scoop logo design was an essential phase in refining the overall aesthetic and concept. I started by brainstorming various elements that would best communicate the artisanal, handcrafted nature of the brand. Working on my tablet allowed me the flexibility to experiment with textures and forms—particularly for the ice cream scoop icon. I focused on using a hand-drawn style to reflect the organic qualities of ice cream and the nostalgic feel of a small-town ice cream shop.

Throughout the sketching, I aimed to balance the playful aspects of the design with clean lines and legibility, experimenting with different font styles and layouts. The tablet provided an interactive way to adjust and manipulate elements in real-time, allowing me to quickly iterate through ideas before settling on a more refined version for the final design. The end result captures the essence of a fun, approachable brand while still feeling personal and crafted.

What I sent to the client

I sent the client a "Final" PDF in which I presented each of my 5 logo options with very limited attention to colour as it's important in this stage to nail down the logo design without having bias towards any particular colours. Each logo option has a design system including fonts and a transparent application in black and white I showcased real world use cases and examples of applications of each logo option.  Below are the options I presented to the client:

Conclusion

The client selected logo option 4 for Fall City Scoop due to its playful and visually balanced design. The vertical arrangement of typography, combined with the cone and scoops, clearly conveys the essence of the brand while being versatile for various mediums. The pastel color palette offered a soft, approachable feel, and the stacked scoops cleverly reinforced the "scoop" theme. This option provided an eye-catching yet professional look, making it perfect for both signage and branding applications.
